Although the Autumn Equinox marks the beginning of the fall season on our calendars, the spiritual forces which cluster about it cannot be thus arbitrarily limited and confined. The spiritual in fluence of the Equinox begins to be fert several weeks before the Sun actually crosses the celestial equator on its journey southward.
About the middle of August, when the Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, the first hint of the approach ing holy time is perceived by the mystical sense. For a few days during this summer month there seems to be an island of autumnal peace; then it is once more overwhelmed by the drowsiness of sum mer before the Sun touches upon the sign Virgo.
When the Sun enters the sign of the Virgin the great descend ing wave of Christ Light contacts the upper reaches of earth's atmosphere, and a cosmic Immaculate Conception takes place as earth prepares to receive her Beloved on His return from the Father's Mansion in the Sun. Mystics and sensitives now become conscious of a brooding tenderness in the psychic envelope of the earth, as interplanetary space resounds with the voices of Angels hymning the Annunciation. The Hosts of Virgo chant of the sublime love expressed in the great sacrifice about to take place; for now it is that earth becomes as it were a cosmic Grail Cup, rimmed by Angels and waiting to be filled with the glorious inflow of the newly Christed power.
During this season our planet assimilates her year's experience and waits with bated breath while the Virgin Mother of the skies distils the cosmic life essence symbolized in the sheaf of wheat which she holds in her hands.
It is significant that when the constellation Virgo rises in the east its principal stars delineate a goblet or cup, which is quite different in appearance from the imaginary figure usually drawn on star maps to represent it. We have here an astronomical reason for Virgo's association with the Holy Grail Mystery. The Grail is one of the tokens of the Archangel Raphael, who is the "ambassador" of the planet Mercury which rules Virgo astrologically; and it is universally recognized as a symbol of prayer and of healing through prayer.
Clairvoyants have always known that during intense prayer the aura of the individual or individuals praying forms itself into a cup like or funnel-like shape that soars aloft into the psychic atmosphere, and literally draws down divine power from the Father. In like fashion the prayer of a devout virgin soul draws down from the heaven world advanced egos who are awaiting incarnation. With the help of ministering Angels they enter her aura, and so descend to the haven of rebirth. Thus are Saviors born in every age.
After passing through Virgo the Sun touches the boundaries of the sign Libra, and the Christ Light now definitely impinges upon the earth's surface. The golden Ray of the Christ blends with the basic yellow of the Autumn Equinox and the whole atmosphere seems to shimmer with solar radiance as the Hosts of Libra join in the joyous hallelujahs of the Lords of Virgo, enwreathing the whirling globe in streamers of life and light.
The mystic Christian observes this great inflow with deep rev erence. To him it is the true Crucifixion, for the Christ is now taking upon Himself once more the burden of sustaining and harmo nizing our discordant planet. As His life flows into the globe, its etheric sheath is suffused with golden luminance, and it seems to be thirstily drinking in the streams of force descending from the autumnal Sun. Now in latitudes where plant life retires for a period of sleep at this time the life energies of the plant turn downward into the soil, coming to rest in root and bulb and seed, which store up the cosmic energy against another cycle of growth to begin in the spring.
The Christ has always done this work for our sphere, just as He does it for other planets of our solar system. But since the Event on Golgotha there has been a difference. He now descends in a very special sense into the heart of the earth globe to govern man kind from within; from within the globe and from within the heart of man himself. Prior to Golgotha He had not yet penetrated to the center. His influence came from without, channeled by Jehovah through certain Archangels who were His ambassadors, governing human evolution as Race Spirits or as tutelary and tribal deities. The light rayed forth by these Archangels was truly the Christ Light, but it reached man indirectly in the race religions.
Were it not for the planetary Immaculate Conception occur ring yearly, bringing the Cosmic Christ to us anew, there could be no evolutionary progress upon earth. It is because of the Christ Inflow that evolution continues. Had that been withdrawn the Lords of Karma would have found it necessary to remove their restraining influence and allow mankind to destroy itself; as many indeed seem bent upon doing in our time. It is the Christ Power, working from within, that has prevented mankind from self-destruction, and is now working to break down the barriers of ignorance which have kept our humanity separated from the great universe without.
